Band 8 essay:
In this day and age, mass media spend considerable amounts of money covering international current affairs. Having said that, local news plays a more pivotal role in individuals' lives and should, therefore, receive higher levels of funding. Personally, I entirely agree with this statement for two reasons.
The core reason why I agree is that local news has a direct impact on people's daily lives. This is because information about local transport, weather warnings, school closures, crime incidents, and community events often affects individuals immediately and can shape their daily decisions. For instance, in many cities, local news channels provide real-time updates on traffic congestion and road accidents. Commuters rely on this to choose safer and faster routes to work. International political conflicts, while important, rarely change someone’s travel route or safety on a particular morning.
Another cogent reason is that local news strengthens community engagement and democracy. Local journalism holds local authorities accountable - mayors, councils, police, hospitals, and schools. Without proper funding of such news coverage, corruption and mismanagement can remain invisible. A salient example of this is the recent flood-control scandal in the Philippines, where millions – if not billions - of pesos earmarked for local infrastructure were allegedly diverted. In practical terms, if the local news media had been under-resourced, this scheme might have continued unnoticed until the damage became catastrophic during one of the subsequent typhoons. Thus, funding local news is not just a matter of information but of safeguarding the community from misuse of public funds and reinforcing the principle of democratic oversight.
In conclusion, although international news should still be covered by newscasters, I am utterly convinced that local news is more important and, therefore, should be granted a larger share of media budgets.
