Many people feel that media coverage is becoming increasingly biased today. Why is this? What can be done to fix this problem? 


There is a growing concern about modern mass media becoming increasingly biased nowadays. As a result, individuals suffer from the problem of distorted information and lack of trust in the news. This is due to the growing media commercialisation when profit becomes more important than objectivity. However, there are a number of measures that can be implemented to resolve the issue of biased news coverage.


One of the most serious causes of media bias is their dependence of advertising income. Mass media because of this are worried about clicks, views and ratings, which leads to complex issues being simplified and emotionally loaded details being prioritised. This, in turns, leads to the selection of facts, while alternative viewpoints tend to be ignored. Such coverage forms a distorted idea of reality among the audience and to a great extent undermines trusts to journalism as a whole.


A practical way to tackle this issue would be to create reliable sources of finances, which would not be directly connected with advertising revenue. For example, a more active support of public broadcasters and non-commercial media organisations would reduce the financial burden and could help journalists to focus on the precision of the information they provide rather than on popularity. If mass media were less dependent on commercial advertising gains caused by the number of clicks their readers make, their news reporting would be more balanced and informative.


In conclusion, the growing bias in media coverage is largely due to commercial pressure which encourages sensationalism and selective reporting. Only when media organisations become financially independent from advertising-oriented models will news coverage start to regain objectivity and trust of the society.
