Sample answer 1:

The line graph illustrates international tourist arrivals, measured in millions, in five regions of the world between 1990 and 2005.

Overall, tourist numbers increased in all areas over the period. North America consistently attracted the highest number of visitors, whereas Central and Eastern Europe experienced the most dramatic growth and almost caught up with North America by the end of the timeframe.

Among the regions with higher figures, North America remained the clear leader throughout. Starting at just over 70 million arrivals in 1990, this figure rose steadily to a peak of around 90 million in 2000 before edging down slightly to approximately 85 million in 2005. Central and Eastern Europe followed a markedly steeper upward trend. Beginning at about 30 million, the number doubled by the mid-1990s and then climbed sharply to roughly 84 million by 2005, leaving only a marginal gap between the two regions.

Turning to the remaining areas, South-East Asia also recorded strong growth, with arrivals more than doubling from around 20 million in 1990 to approximately 45 million in 2005. South America and Sub-Saharan Africa both attracted far fewer tourists overall. Although South America started marginally behind Sub-Saharan Africa at the beginning of the period, it overtook it early on and finished with slightly higher figures, at about 20 million compared with roughly 18 million.

Sample answer 2:

The line graph shows international tourist arrivals in five parts of the world from 1990 to 2005.

Overall, the number of tourists who arrived increased in all the areas during the period. North America had the highest number of arrivals, while Central and Eastern Europe witnessed the largest increase.

As for the areas with higher numbers, North America was an absolute leader throughout the period. Having started at just over 70 million visitors in 1990, the number of tourists arriving in this part of the world increased to 90 million a decade later (the highest number covered by the graph), before declining slightly to approximately 85 million tourists. Central and Eastern Europe saw a steady increase throughout the period: starting from 30 million in 1990, the number then doubled five years later and then surged to around 84 million in 2005, almost reaching parity with North America.

When it comes to the remaining places, South-East Asia more than doubled from 20 to roughly 45 million during the period being considered. Although South Africa started slightly higher than South America (about 9 million and around 8 million, respectively), the former was soon overtaken by the latter, and by the end of the period being considered South America recorded slightly higher figures than Sub-Saharan Africa (approximately 20 million arrivals vs roughly 18 million for the latter).
